Louie Arnayuirnaaq
b. Baker Lake, Nunavut Territory, Canada
Louie Arnayuirnaaq is an Inuit artist who works primarily with sculpture. He is the son of another well-known Inuit artist, the “carver” Tuna Iquliq. Yvonne Kanayuq Arnakyuinak and Paul Arnakyuinak, who are also carvers in Baker Lake, adopted the artist and greatly influenced his style and choice of medium. Many of the artist’s sculptures revolve around the theme of labor, family, and the wildlife that inhabits the Nunavut Territory. The artist’s sculptures tend toward traditional Inuit themes, and his minimalist use of form reflects an avant-garde sensibility, which can be seen in his sculpture of a muskox.
